Carrier Wars – All About The Numbers
Where do the carriers stand?
By Kyle on August 5, 2009 at 3:22 pm

networks

Verizon Wireless is leading in the United States with 87.7 million subscribers. Closely tailing Verizon is AT&T with around 80 million. This is largely due to AT&T’s exclusive deal to sell the iPhone. So that speaks loads about Verizon because they don’t have a phone anywhere near as popular as the iPhone and have around 7 million more customers.

In third place is Sprint which is behind in the game. Even with the launch of the Palm Pre last quarter Sprint’s subscribers are declining. Currently they have 48.8 million customers. They HTC Hero is rumored to launch in the United States on Sprint so that might help.

Bringing up the rear is T-Mobile with just over 30 million subscribers. The reason for this is largely because of their late adoption of a 3G network. Now that they have one established they can hopefully get more customers.

There isn’t much information on the 5800i, but what we do know is that it is pretty similar to the 5800, but with the lack of a wifi antenna. Great stuff right? Who really needs that thing anyways. Well there are some pictures in the gallery after the break. Enjoy.

LG finally announces this tall, slender phone after it has been floating around the web for quite some time. These are the first photos released by LG displaying their new handheld, the New Chocolate, a play on one of their phones that brought them up in market dominance at the time. I’m actually liking how it looks, though you can look for yourself, and tell us what you think!

Nokia N97 ‘Mini’
Pictures have been released showing a mini N97 in the wild.

Some pictures have shown up on Engadget showing off a mini version of the Nokia N97. If you ask me, it looks pretty pointless, being only slightly smaller than its big brother. What I can see from the pictures is that it drops the touch pad to the left of the keys, and loses the protector over the camera lens and flash. Screen size is also about 10-15% smaller than the N97. Take a look and see what you think about it.

Sprint Spends $483 Million To Acquire Virgin Mobile
Boost Mobile gaining market share
By Kyle on July 28, 2009 at 8:04 am

sprint-virgin

Why would Sprint bother spending so much to acquire Virgin Mobile? The reason isn’t to increase Sprint’s users but their prepaid Boost Mobile’s. Boost Mobile’s position is now strengthened in the prepaid market. Also they will benefit from all the new high level employees from Virgin Mobile.

“I have known Dan Schulman for many years, and I feel very fortunate that a leader with Dan’s talents is joining Sprint to take us to even greater heights in prepaid,” Hesse says.

Sprint is gaining market share and catching up in the game. They may soon take over as top dog.

iPhone App Store Denies Google Voice App
Say It Ain't So
By Kyle on July 27, 2009 at 11:55 pm

no google voice

Apple denied the official Google Voice app today and has started removing the other 3rd party Google Voice apps. This is a HUGE letdown for iPhone users. Android and Blackberry already have apps for it and had no problems doing so. The truth is Apple doesn’t care about whether or not Google Voice goes through, AT&T does. Once again AT&T screws with the iPhone. Boo!

Get Wi-Fi On Your Phone With Micro SD Card
Sweet, my new Blackberry can get Wi-Fi
By Kyle on July 26, 2009 at 9:38 pm

micro sd wlan wifi

Many smartphones and feature phones come without Wi-Fi built in. This can be a real drag to use the relatively slow 3G network compared to your home wireless internet. Also Wi-Fi usually uses less battery life than cellular data does. KDDI Corp developed a solution. At the Wireless Japan 2009 expo KDDI announced two different versions of a Micro SD card that will bring Wi-Fi to your phone. Check out the source for a more in depth explanation.
