3GS is the third generation of Apple’s iPhone. The new version looks exactly the same as the old version, contrary to some proposed images. The big changes here are internal. Apple is boasting that most apps now run twice as fast with the improved internals. Also a digital compass was added for use in apps such as Maps to point in the direction it is facing. The only other update is the camera, now 3 megapixel with autofocus. There is no flash which is sort of a bummer, but the addition of autofocus will make the pictures so much better. Read on for the rest of the updates and features on the 3GS.

On the topic of the camera, it does take video at long last! The quality looks outstanding in Apple’s video demos and it has some simple editing built in. Also now when you hold down the Home button you activate voice control. It allows you to call, play music, and other things by simply dictating it to do such. Even though both of these are just software update it will not be released to the iPhone or iPhone 3G, which as an iPhone 3G user I am quite sad about.

The older iPhones do get to take advantage to the updated operating system though. One feature you get with the new 3.0 OS is Spotlight. With Spotlight you can search everything on your phone at once. This will be quite useful for those with a lot of apps. Also all users will get to take advantage of the widescreen keyboard, found in Safari, on most applications. This means widescreen for texting and email! Speaking of texting you can send more than words now with the addition of MMS. Now you can send pictures, contacts, videos, and more in your MMS messages. Unfortunately the first generation iPhone does not get to take advantage of this feature. Tethering will be available on the new OS but it is only available if your carrier supports it. There is no word on AT&T about this. Turn by Turn directions are now available. Tomtom is going to release an app for it too. Also you can record voice memos but there were already several apps for this in the App Store. There are many many more features for OS 3.0 that I haven’t listed but are all going to be welcome additions.

You can pick your iPhone 3GS up at your favorite Apple or AT&T store on June 19, 2009 in 16GB or 32GB versions for $199 and $299 on contract. Also if you like last year’s technology the iPhone 3G in 8GB is available today for just $99 on contract. The 3G is a great phone but for just $100 more I would go for the newer model.

Update: AT&T has confirmed that it will offer tethering. No date or service cost though.
