There hasn’t been this much hype for a phone since the iPhone. Some people camped out overnight in front of Sprint stores, but they were in much smaller numbers and much less days spent in line securing their position for their new gadget than those waiting for the iPhone, some up to one week. Nevertheless the Palm Pre was sold out at most stores before noon. The main reason for this is because of the short supply of this device. Even though there aren’t many devices available right now, there will be in a couple months. The research firm iSuppli estimates that Palm would sell around 1 million units in 2009. This is unbelievably low in comparison to the iPhone 3G’s release which sold 1 million units during its opening weekend.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get a hold of a Pre so it will be a while before I can write about first hand use. What I have read from other reviews make the device sound mostly positive, the OS especially. The hardware was really the only complaint among reviewers saying that the keys were quite small and that the edges were sharp around the keyboard. Personally I hope that isn’t the case though, so I will have to see for myself.
Right now the Pre seems a little better than the iPhone 3G. The problem I see for Palm though is the high probability that a new iPhone will be released June 8th that will be undoubtedly better than the Palm Pre. This will hurt their sales a lot especially if Apple does release a $99 device.
